Looking for some ways to save water and money? Try these helpful lawn watering tips.

Did you know Grass, Plants, Trees and Shrubs are healthier when watered deeply and infrequently?

Deep watering allows the soil to be soaked several inches deep, making water more readily available to plants and allowing more efficient use of water in the case of prolonged dry spells. It also aids in the development of strong roots.

Infrequent watering encourages deep root systems making plants more tolerant of drought conditions. Frequent light watering can lead to shallow root growth and make plats more susceptible to drought.

Use short on/off sprinkler cycles (about 5-15 minutes on, 1 hour off, then repeat until well watered).

Adjust sprinklers & water when it’s cool: Sprinklers should water your lawn and
garden, not the street or sidewalk. Set irrigation timers to water during the coolest part of the day (typically early morning or late evening) to minimize evaporation and reduce peak demand. Avoid mid-day watering.

Adjust your watering schedule throughout the irrigation season: Match watering to
weather (more when it is hot and dry, less when it is cooler and wet). Adjusting
weekly or when conditions change helps you water your landscape more efficiently.

Apply the amount of water your soil can absorb: Water thoroughly, but
infrequently. If runoff or puddling occurs, break longer watering sessions into
several short cycles, allowing water to soak into the soil between each session. Water any small grass areas by hand to avoid waste. On steep slopes, try a soaker hose to help prevent wasteful runoff.

Sprinklers that throw large drops in a flat pattern are much more effective than those with a fine, high spray. You will lose less water to evaporation with the larger drops.
